Final post; Post 4. Chapter 7 brandon Maynard
So, this is pretty interesting. What I did not tell you about my last post is that it also involved Chapter 7 which is cooperative learning. Let’s review some real quick. The students were given the assignment to research what made the south so much different from the north, and then reverse it and discuss why the north and south were similar. Like I said before, the discussion was great. The students really seemed to get into it. The big topic was slavery of course. When we started in on it, the discussion started to get a little off topic, but it was still great stuff. So, the students, when working on the vin diagram, were placed into groups of two or three and they worked together to fill out the chart. Not only were they to fill out the chart, but before they could do this, they had to create the spider web of brainstorming to come up with similarities and differences between the north and south. I thought this was a great activity and the students love to work in groups so it worked out really well. Once the students completed the work, I then gave them the instructions for their assignment. They were told to recall the information from the day’s lesson and create a 2 page report comparing and contrasting the north and south during the Civil War. It was great because they were not expecting it. They were so bummed about having to write the paper. I don’t want to sound mean or like some big bully who wants to make their lives miserable. However, they did the work in class; we had the discussion. All they have to do is put that discussion into words. They even were in cooperative learning groups to discuss the information with each other before we did the discussion as a class so the information was not only discussed once, but it should have been discussed twice. I think it went well. The students, I fell, will do a great job overall with the paper; however I know there will be some that have some problems getting it turned in on time.
